Kem Bagai Budi - We're Coming!

On the 19-22 November 2008, a training camp was held in Kem Bagai Budi, Sandakan. On 10-13 June 2009, a training camp WILL BE HELD in the same venue! The 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade Company, bringing along the 3rd Sandakan Girls' Brigade Company will be right back in Kem Bagai Budi! This time, our dormitory will be located in SK Sung Siew, Sandakan.

Below are pictures of what we experienced earlier on, in year 2008.

What are we going to face in the upcoming camp? It'll surely be a total different exposure with the Girls around. Do check for updates in the blog!

There will be a first aid exam being held in the Red Cross Centre on this coming Sunday (26th April 2009). This session is only eligible for those who attended the First Aid course in the end of last year, month of November. Members, please be there by 8.30 am in your Muftis as it will start at nine. Bring along your uniform too. We will be going up to the parade ground after the exam ends, for the Awards Presentation Ceremony.

Swimming Award - Sibuga Sports Complex

On 18th April (Saturday), the 2nd Sandakan Brigade Coy organised the swimming exam in Sibuga Sports Complex. Captain Raymond, Lt Jackey and Mr Hing Kwan Hung were the invigilators today.

The Boys passed the Water Adventure award in NS camp, which was few months back. Sir Raymond had to hold the badge until they pass the swimming award, and now that whoever has passed the swimming badge will be able to get their water adventure too!

For those who have failed the exam, do not give up. The Brigade Boy never gives up!

Junior bi-Annual Camp 2009

The 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade and 3rd Sandakan Girls' Brigade company had organised a junior camp in SJK (C) Chi Hwa. It was an evangelistic camp, aiming Brigade members of the age 9-13 years. The committee members went to Wisma Basel and slept overnight a day before the camp started, to do some final preparations.

Day 1 -14th March 2009

Today was the first day of Junior Camp - NCOs and YLs were to arrive in the school compound by 8.30am. Registration started at 9 and the camp b riefing began. The highlights of the day include: telematch, War Game - Tour of Duty and sharing by Rev. James. Mr Lai, the song leader of worship session came teaching the kids some simple songs and their actions, to be performed on the next day during Enrolment Service in Basel Church.

Day 2 -15th March 2009

The campers woke at 7.00am and got themselves ready to board the bus to Basel Church to attend the Enrolment Service of the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade and 3rd Sandakan Girls' Brigade.The entire ceremony started with the marching in of colors by the Color Party. Members in the Color Party are Sgt Kwan Lik Jing, Sgt Daniel Fan, YL Mandy Lo, YL Chiang Lisa and Sgt Siah Boon Kiat. Then, the BB & GB danced the song "For All You've Done" followed by the singing performance by the juniors. Enrolment & Rededication was carried out to the recruits, NCOs and YLs. The long years service badge was awarded to Sgt Kwan Lik Jing. At the same time, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant, together with Sgt Siah Boon Kiat.

After that, the service ended with the marching out of colors and silent prayer. The campers then stayed back in Wisma Basel for the Sports Carnival before they went back to the campsite at 4.30pm.

Day 3 -16th March 2009

The campers had two destinations to head to - Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre and Chung Ying Biscuit Factory. Two buses were rented to pick up the campers to their respective visitation spots. Momentos were given to persons in charge of both the places as a mark of appreciation. Then, the campers cleaned the school area and had lunch. Opening Ceremony started at 3pm. The junior members formed the Guard of Honour and Sgt Daniel Fan was the parade commander. The Guest of Honour, Mdm Ooi Mee Har, the headmistress of SJK (C) Chi Hwa inspected their uniforms. At 4.30pm, both the campers and committee members went back to their homes.

This camp will be held once in every two years, with evangelistic purposes and implementing the BB and GB good qualities into the children. See you, Junior Camp 2011!

Recruitment Strategies ACCOMPLISHED

On 7th January 2009, the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade and 3rd Sandakan Girls' Brigade company had a recruitment project in SM Sung Siew. They held an exhibition, together with the other uniform bodies in the school, such as the Scouts, Girl Guide, Red Crescent Society and St John Ambulance.

The members started their preparation at 7.00 am. The BB and GB exhibited the band instruments, badges and awards, uniforms and t-shirts. The recruitment team members decided to do more on promotion this year. Thus, banners were hung and card calendars were given out to the students who came to visit our slot. Furthermore, the Girls' Brigade members baked muffins to be given out to the students.

After the exhibition slot in the school grandstand, the members line the new students up and led them to the school mini theater. There, a talk was given by both the BB and GB, introducing our activities held weekly and annually, such as the Pesta, ANTS, RBNTS, Enrolment Sunday and Founder's Day. Finally, Rev. James and Lt. Alexander hosted the sharing session with the new students, explaining why they should be part of BB and GB. The response slips and card calendars were then given out to the new students.

In overall, the recruitment project was done as planned. Each and everyone of the members contributed a lot to ensure this recruitment program a success. On the coming Sunday, the results will then be known - whether the new students are going to join us or not.

Christmas Events - 2nd Sandakan BB Coy

Although the company has had its closing ceremony, the activities are not "closed" yet. The company had planned a lot of activities for the members throughout this Christmas, so as to ensure that the BB Boys can spend their Christmas this year in a more meaningful way.

Besides the Agape Christmas Day, the members went caroling together with Rev. James. That was on 15th and 16th December 2008, when the BB/GB members went to 7 houses where non-Christian families live in. This is a kind of fellowship which had enabled the relationship among the Boys to have obviously been improved.

A Christmas Party was organized by the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade Company together with the 3rd Sandakan Girls' Brigade Company in Wisma Basel on 21st December 2008. A snowman was made using recycled papers and cotton wool by the BB/GB members. The party started at 2.00 pm, when the guests started coming in one by one.

The entire celebration began with Praise & Worship lead by Mr Alexander with a team of worship members from the BB and GB. Then the audiences continued with some Bible Scriptures reading and watched a drama presentation done by the BB and GB too. Rev. James shared some sermons with the people who came, and gave out a unique pen to each and every one of them who came as a little Christmas gift. He also gave out some respond forms, asking whether the people who came are ready to accept Lord Jesus.

After that, the lucky draw started. There were a lot of prizes being given out, ranging from electronic gadgets and household tools. The games started right after the Lucky Draw. After playing some games, the audiences started getting themselves some refreshments prepared by the organizing committees before going back home.

On 24th December 2008, the BB and GB participated in the Basel Church Christmas Eve Service. The BB/GB members went into the Praise & Worship team as backup singers. Besides, they had also performed a singing and dancing show to the church congregations. The song "Joy to the World" was sang and a positive response was given to the performers.

That's all for Christmas 2008. Since the activities held were successful, more performances will be carried out in the district level next year.

Charity Project - Christmas Day

It's Christmas Day! The 2nd Sandakan Charity Project team went to the Agape Centre on
06 November 2008 to celebrate Christmas with the children there. After several days of preparations, the event was finally held in the centre.

Our chaplain, Rev. James Wong was invited to the celebration too!. The event started with a singspiration by the BB members. They sang "Feliz Navidad", "Joy to the World" and "Silent Night". Then, the teacher in charge, Cikgu Jukinah came out and gave a speech. She expressed her deepest gratitude to the BB members who volunteered to come and support this meaningful event. After that, Rev. James shared some messages with the children, telling them what is Christmas and what they should do on Christmas Day.

After that, Rev. James and Cikgu Juninah were invited to give out the presents to the children. Before this, the BB members had received a wishlist from them and the Boys went out to shop for the presents. Now, the children finally have their dreams come true.

This event is a great success. Being the first company in Malaysia to organise such an activity, the 2nd Sandakan is now confident enough to organize the Christmas Event once again next year, involving the other companies in the district level. We hope that we will continue to gain support from the community.

Closing Ceremony

On 29th November 2008, the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade company had its Closing Ceremony in the parade ground.

The boys and girls reached Wisma Basel at 1.30 pm. Then, the Guards of Honor falled in and awaited the Guest of Honor, Rev. Tsen's arrival. Cpl Siah Boon Kiat was the parade commander, Cpl Daniel Fan the Color Bearer and Cpl Sweeney Ku the Color Sergeant. After uniform inspection. the Guard of Honor had a march-past round the parade square.

Then, the ceremony continued with a singspiration lead by Lt Alexander Liew. There was a live band playing the songs which were sung. After that Rev. Tsen shared a message with the Boys' and Girls' Brigade members. Then, a performances were presented by the BB and GB. The BB did first aid while GB did drill. The BB & GB both falled in according to squads to receive awards and promotion. The ceremony ended with a momento presentation to the GOH, Rev. Tsen.

Congratulations to those who were promoted. On the other hand, Captain Raymond encouraged those who were not promoted not to give up as they still have a chance to promoted in next year's Enrollment Sunday, provided that they do well in the upcoming Junior Camp next year.

ANTS Sabah 2008

On 13th - 15th November 2008, The Sabah State Advanced NCO Training School (ANTS) was held in BCCM, Tawau. The Boys' Brigade members from all over Sabah travelled to BCCM to attend this course. There were a total number of 20 trainees while for the 2nd Sandakan Company, 5 NCOs from the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade Company took part in the course. Members who registered are at least 15 years of age, and had passed their BNTS level. The main syllabus in this course include: Time Management, Decision Making, Conflict Management, Goal Setting and Presentation Skills.

The opening ceremony of the ANTS was officiated by the Guest of Honor, Captain Liew Soo Chee on 13th November. The members of the training were trained to be proactive, instead of waiting for instructions before they take action. Each and everyone of them was given the chance to talk and debate over current issues.

ANTS Sabah 2008 was ended on the 15th November. The members gathered in the Conference Room for the Closing Ceremony, which was once again planned by all the NCOs themselves. Trainees shared about what they think about the course, and what they have learnt throughout the three days two nights course.

The main outcome for the trainees was that all the members are no longer slack-NCO's in the company. They had been trained to set up their own goals to be achieved by their respective companies. Besides, the members got very tough eversince joining the camp because the ANTS emphasized on discipline. It is hoped that all the NCO's can carry out their jobs as leaders in the company so that the Boys' Brigade Ministry can continue to grow stronger.

NS Potential Leader Training Camp

On the 19-22 November 2008, a training camp was held in Kem Bagai Budi, Sandakan. It is a training ground for the National Service trainees and the 2nd Sandakan Company is very lucky to have the chance to conduct the training over there. There are three objectives of organizing the camp. First, to promote leadership qualities among NCOs; Second, to train up toughness and endurity of the NCOs and Third, to give the members an early exposure of what National Service is like.

For the members, the most beneficial activity was drill. The NS Trainers taught the proper movement in drill. Besides, Captain Raymond also selected 5 commanders to be trained by the trainers. The trainers taught them the proper command language and the correct intonation slang to be used.

Various activities were organized in this camp and they were held in both indoors and outdoors. For the indoor activities, the "Character Building" module was introduced. This helped the members a lot as teenagers nowadays were distracted by too many attractions and they do not know the proper thing to be done at the right time. The module also includes the "commitment-action ratio".

As for the outdoor activities, the members were given the opportunity to try out the basic obstacle race used by the NS trainees. They include: 1.6 feet wall, monkey bar and tunnel. Some basic survival skills were also taught by the trainers. The members learned camper's, compass reading, cooking and bearing search. The Explorace was also held in order to ensure the campers are able reapplicate the skills taught. Besides, the members were also given the chance to do kayaking!

In conclusion, the Potential Leadership Training Camp was a great success. The participants earned a lot in this camp. Captain Raymond recognizes the capability of the trainers in conducting activities. It is predicted that the training will go on annually. The SDC (Sabah District Council) camp is likely to be organised here in next year too!

XMas Charity Project - Decorations

Like what was mentioned in the previous post, the Xmas Charity Project will start in the month of November. On the 12nd November 2008, the Charity Project team went to the Agape Centre to put up the decorations for the Xmas Event to be held on the 12nd December 2008.

The boys waited at the Agape Centre at 10.00 am while waiting for Officer Alex to bring the Christmas Tree from the church. Everyone started to get to work at 10.30 am.

However, it was found that the upper part of the Christmas Tree brought to the centre wasn't the correct one. Therefore, the boys had to ignore the upper part and started with the bottom one with some coloured spheres and stars as decorations. The upper part will then be brought to the centre on the next day.

The decorations were simple enough to be done completely in approximately 1 hour. The Boys did not forget to clean up the place before they went home.

Brigade Cup - Football

It's the 2nd week of November and the football competition is held. The boys gathered in the parade ground and waited for the Officers to send them to the field in SK Sung Siew. The junior boys had their basketball match in the mini court too.

Competition was very tight and finally, Alpha Squad came out the champion once again. Congratulations!

BB Reachout '08

The BB Reachout program is actually a campaign started by the government. Its aim is to raise awareness among youths regarding the current popular issues related with AIDS/HIV. A seminar was held by the Sabah State Council and 2nd Sandakan did send a representative to attend the seminar. Captain Raymond brought Cpl Siah Boon Kiat over to Kota Kinabalu and took part in the 2 days 1 night course. Then, Corporal Siah is required to explain to the members in the company about AIDS and HIV so that the boys can help spread the news to their peers, too!

The talk conducted was given a positive response by the boys. The boys should then take the next step by explaining to at least 20 of their friends about this issue and get their signatures in order to prove that they have done so. After accomplishing all the requirements, the boys will then be awarded the Red Ribbon.

Sung Siew Speech Day '08

On the 7th November 2008, the boys were once again invited to play some songs during the Speech Day. Datuk Dr Kamaruzaman as the Guest of Honour of the day, arrived at 8.30a.m, which was welcomed by the band. Then, national anthems were played, such as Negaraku, Sabah Tanah Airku. Throughout the event, a few songs were played : -

It was such a hot day but nothing is impossible for the boys, they still did their very best to present the songs. Good job, boys! The ceremony ended with the school song, 'Onwards Sung Siew Students'.

Annual Dinner '08

Well, the boys were invited to perform during the Annual Dinner on the 1st of November 2008. 5 songs were played and it went very well. However, not all the boys stayed for dinner, as for them who did not stay, they went back to arrange the instruments at Basel Church, thanks for that. And, Officer Alex attended the dinner too, to support the boys and of course to provide transportation for them to get back to Basel Church, thanks officer!

Welcome song was played during the arrival of the Guest of Honour.

Brigade Cup - Basketball

The Brigade Cup is held once a year. 2007 was when it started and it's the 2nd year that the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade Company is organising such a meaningful event. It is also a chance not to be missed by all the NCO's of the Lance Corporal rank to perform themselves and show their qualities to the officers in order to enable them to advance to the next rank.

The boys were divided into 3 groups, namely Alpha, Bravo and Charlie. The sports which are going to be organised this year include basketball, football, captain ball and badminton.

The basketball event was held at 26th October 2008. Initially it rained, but thank God it stopped and the boys managed to go to the basketball court in SM Sung Siew for the game. It was a tight competition and squad ALPHA became the champion!

Congratulations, squad members of ALPHA!

Football will be organised next week. The boys are encouraged to prepare themselves in order to be ready to compete with their opponents once again!

XMas Charity Project

Do you believe in Santa? Well, if you don't, I believe the 2nd Sandakan BB will make you do so. This is because the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade Company is going to be the pioneer in organising the Xmas Project. The targetted group is the children in Agape Centre. The main objective of this event is to help the children have their wishes come true!

The first meeting has been conducted and these are the committee members involved in playing the Santa role in the Christmas Project:

30 August 2008 - National Day Band Parade

On the 30th August 2008, the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade Company Brass Band was invited by the Sandakan Municipal Council to take part in the National Day Parade held in the Sandakan Town Hall. Cpl Kwan Lik Jing was the band major for this marching parade. At 6.00 am, the boys gathered at the parade meeting ground to collect their respective instruments and walked down to the starting point near Gentingmas Mall.

At 8.30 am, all the contingents started marching to the Town Hall. The boys started strong and remained strong all the way into the Hall. With fine drum solos and sweet melody, the band managed to impress the community. Marching past the stage was the climax, when the band major had a perfect macework throwing the major mace up into the sky and had an awesome catch!

Finally, the parade ended at 10.00 am. Everybody went back to Wisma Basel, and had a little reflection session. The band members recounted what they have done wrong and what they can do in order to improve the band to a higher level. Then, they went back home.

The band quality once dropped, but it seems that has improved. The senior NCO's are encouraged to help out in the band and drill so that the company will grow faster and stronger.

Charity Project

Originated from Singapore BB, the 2nd Sandakan Boys’ Brigade Company will be the first company in Malaysia doing such a project. This charity project is to help the targeted group of children have their dream come true by giving them small Christmas presents.

Currently, we have been targeting the Agape Centre kids. They are mostly mentally disabled and the Agape Centre is where they learn their basic everyday life skills in order to survive in the society. The NCO’s in charge will be those of the rank Lance Corporal and Corporal only.

A rough schedule has been made and it goes like this:

The project will start in the 2nd week of November, where the company will be looking for sponsor in order to ensure this project a successful one. At the same time, another group of boys will be decorating a Christmas trees with dangling envelops, which enables the children to write their Christmas wishes. In early December, the boys will go back and collect the envelops, leaving the Christmas trees there. Then, the Boys will try their best to fulfill the children's wishes. Sources of funds are the Church members, the Boys' parents, and sponsors from different corporations. By the 3rd week of December, the presents should all be prepared and the Boys will once again go back to the centre and place the presents underneath the Christmas tree. At 25th December, the boys will return to the centre and celebrate Christmas with the boys.

This project is going to be a very meaningful one. Though the less-gifted Agape are mentally disabled, they still deserve a chance to lead a healthy and happy life. However, resources, including man-power and financial are limited. The 2nd Sandakan Boy's Brigade company sincerely needs support from people of all walks of life to contribute in this project.

NCO Council

On the 06th July 2008, the 08/09 session NCO council was formed. The new committee members are as follows:

The rest of the NCO's of the company are the members of the council. Mdm Hiew, who is the teacher advisor of the BB in SM Sung Siew came to the parade meeting to form the new council. A brief meeting was held by her, telling the new committee members what to do in the following session and exchange opinions in ways of making the school society a better one.

15th June 2008 - Parade Meeting

Today is Corporal Kwan's first day as the band major. The target boys were recruited inside the brass band too! Everybody well with the band major. There will be a band performance on this coming Saturday, that is the Hari Belia service. That'll be the first performance which is lead by Corporal Kwan.

Then, Captain introduced us a new officer who was an Ex-S/Sgt. That's Staff Sergeant Hing Kwan Hung. He'll be in charge of the NCOs' qualities and the Campers together with Computer Knowledge award. Furthermore, he will also make sure that the members who are going to be promoted end of this year deserve the respective promotions.

Besides, Sgt Ng Kok Ming and Kevin Leong from the 1st Sandakan Coy came to practise Advanced Drill. Captain advised the advanced drillers to be ready for the exam, especially the commands as they will have to sit for the exams soon. The same thing goes to the basic drillers, as Corporal Siah finish teaching the movements, the exam will be held.

After that, the boys fall out and went back home.

Pesta's OVER! The boys had fun in UMS, Kota Kinabalu during the Pesta. It was a great eye-opener for everybody as it was their first time joining such a great camp! Today, not all the members turned up for meeting, probably because they have to take some rest at home after the tiring trip in KK.

Parade meeting went as usual today. Former Staff Sergeant Hing Kwan Hung came back and shared his experience in National Service with the boys. He received the "Wira Terbaik" award inside the camp. According to S/Sgt Hing, the skills that we learn in BB, drill and campers especially, are very useful inside the NS camp. The drill manual is more or less the same with the one in BB. Therefore, he encouraged the members to work hard and try their best to learn what they can inside the Boys' Brigade so that they can have themselves ready for the coming NS camp.

Besides, the Year-4 boys also had their Christian Education lesson. Sir Andrew was able to finish the basic award syllabus and asked the boys to complete the award book and hand it in the next week.

After that, the boys went to the parade ground to drill. Captain wanted the new members to be trained up so that they can attend the 2010 Pesta in Penang and take part in the drill competition there. Then, they learnt Drill Advance, which is the commands and movements of the Guard of Honor and Color Party.

Next, they fall out. Before everybody went home, captain declared Cpl Kwan Lik Jing the band major and Cpl Siah Boon Kiat the drill commander of the company. Congratulations!

Pesta 2008 - "Our Youth, Our Future"

FINALLY~! It's Pesta, and the boys were ready for this breath-taking event. The boys departed Sandakan on 29th May 2008, a day before the actual camp starts. The venue for Pesta 2008 is Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), which is the largest university in Malaysia. The boys managed to do some shopping in Centrepoint and Warisan Square, since they have a day's time before registration.

Day 1, 30th May 2008

The first day of the Pesta camp - people from all over the country, Singapore and Republic of the Philipines depart to UMS, Kota Kinabalu from their respective homes. The registration was done today. Each registered company was provided a set of properties - name tag, Pesta Handbook, water bottle, toilet roll, shampoo and soap. In the evening, the campers were given a briefing on camp rules and dress codes.

Day 2, 31th May 2008

Pesta Kaamatan, a big day for the Kadazan-Dusun's in Sabah. The participants had a morning devotion in the UMS Lecture Hall before heading to Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA). The members were lucky enough that they were exposed to the traditional cultures of this ethnic. After that, they took a bus to the Likas Stadium, the place where the Pesta 2008 Opening Ceremony was held.

This is actually a big event for the 2nd Sandakan Boys, as they had been practising hard for the band march-past and formation and today they are going to perform.Everything went smooth when the band members found out that they have to play the "General Salute" bugle and they did not know how because they were not told beforehand. Luckily Sir Nicholas was around to help. He solo-ed that bugle piece when general salute took place. Beside that, the boys did very well. The "chopstick drum solo" at the end of the band formation was AWESOME!

The boys met former chaplain Pastor Ngui there. She lead the prayer before the event started, and gave compliment after it ended. She said that it's obvious the 2nd Sandakan Boys had been working hard for this great event and she's glad to see that!

Day 3, 1st June 2008

Another big day for the 2nd Sandakan boys. Today was the National Drill Competition. The participants wore their uniforms to the morning devotion as they had to go to PALAPES field, the competition ground right after the devotion.

Unfortunately, the commander Corporal Siah had sore throat and wasn't able to command well. That had definitely caused some mark loss in overall. Furthermore, some of the drill members made mistakes during the drill sequence. Besides, competition was too tight. Companies from West Malaysia and Sarawak were fit physically, and it is a fact that the boys did not have enough practice. They did not get into the finals and they lost the competition. However, it is no doubt that all of them had done their best, and nobody was to be put to blame for the failure. Sir Raymond encouraged the commander and asked him to train up the new recruits so that they will be ready for the next Pesta in Penang.

After that, the rehearsal for singing competition took place. Those who were not involved in the singing competition were required to go to the PALAPES ground for bamboo dance practice, as there will be a record-breaking event the next day. At night, the campers were transported to the UMS Lecture Hall for the singing competition. The participants from 2nd Sandakan lead by S/Sgt Yap Fook Lim sang "I Will Follow You". They did greatly and achieved the 5th runner up in the competition.

Day 4, 2nd June 2008

Bamboo Dance - the highlight of Pesta camp. Bamboo dance is actually a traditional Magunatip dance. The campers had been practising hard for that. All the campers have one aim in common, which is to break the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) in "Biggest Participation in Bamboo Dance". The Boys' Brigade Malaysia had a successful attempt in achieving the biggest participation in 402 eight-feet long bamboo dance in 20 minutes non-stop. The ceremony was officiated and witnessed by YB Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah, Deputy Chief Minister, Sabah.

After the record breaking event, they moved to One Borneo Shopping Mall to have lunch and also to walk around. One Borneo is a new shopping mall which will be having its soft opening on 8th June. After that, the participants went back to UMS and got ready for the gospel concert at night.

At night, the Pesta campers went to the Tun Mustapha Auditorium for the Gospel Concert. Pastor Jonathan and the Charis gave the boys and girls an enjoyable moment. They waved, shouted, clapped, yelled, cheered, and they PRAISED Him! It was a fantastic night and everybody got very, very high.

Day 5, 3rd June 2008

Today is the second last day of Pesta. The participants were brought on a city tour, which included visits to places like the Sabah Museum, Tanjung Aru Beach and Centre Point. After that, they were brought to the Putera Restaurant for the closing ceremony. That was the final opportunity for the members to interact with each other and exchange contacts. There were a lot of dance performances on stage, and winners for the group singing competition were invited to perform once again too! Everyone had a enjoyable time having dinner in Putera Restaurant. After that, all of them took the bus back to UMS.

Day 6, 4th June 2008

The last day of Pesta, when people who gathered from all over the country have to bid each other farewell. However, the Sandakan District members had an extra night's stay. After cleaning up and checking out, they spent the day shopping in Merdeka Square, Centre Point and Warisan Square.

Day 7, 5th June 2008

This is the very very last day the Boys and Girls stayed in Kota Kinabalu. The bus took off at 8.00 am, heading for Sandakan. The bus stopped in Tamparuli and gave the members time to have breakfast. After that, it departed straight away for Sandakan. They reached their destination at approximately 3.30 pm. Then, they went back home.

Pre-Pesta Training Camp

On the 25 - 27th May 2008, a training camp was once again held in the parade ground, after the weekly parade meeting. Pesta participants were given a briefing on what they have to bring and prepare for this big event.

The campers checked in after they fall out. After that, they were given a night's rest at home before they come back to the ground and do last minute preparation before they depart to Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kota Kinabalu.

The main purpose of this camp was to brush up the band, drill and singing team and to prepare themselves for Pesta. Besides, the members became closer with each other after the camp, this will surely help in making this Pesta trip a successful one.

CONGRATULATIONS to Private Seck Min Guang, he is now a Lance Corporal. After 4 years of hard work, he's now promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

Training Course - 19th May 2008

Most of the boys came back to the training ground today. The practice started at 9.00 am sharp. The band members practised the songs which will be played in Pesta. There are approximately 6 songs to be played during the presentation. Drummers were able to play the chopstick drum solo very well.

At 12.00, the boys went home, while drill members stayed back. This is the very first practice captain had with the boys after the examinations. The boys performed well. Captain reminded the commander not to exceed the border of the competition ground as marks will be deducted for that. After that, captain bought the boys lunch and sent them back home. *Thank You Captain!*

Parade Meeting - 18th May 2008

Meeting went back to normal today. The band members came back for practice, and it was a great one. We were taught a new song, "Genghis Khan".

We did not miss the opportunity to practise the band formation. Boys were getting familiar with the formation. They became serious when they were told that 2nd Sandakan is probably the only band attending the PESTA. The drill team couldn't have its practice because of the heavy rainfall after the band practice. Drill boots have arrived, and the boys took theirs of respective sizes.

The boys were then asked to come back to the parade ground the next day, from 9.00am till 12.00. Drill members were asked to stay till 1.00pm, lunch will be provided.

Day OFF - 11 May 2008

Once again, there's no meeting today. The members are having exam. They have 3 more days to go before the exam ends. Drill practice will start right after the exam, on Thursday, during Co-curriculum time. Besides, Drill and Band members are required to come back the following Sunday, as there'll be intensive training for the PESTA.

Drill Practice - 04 May 2008

There's no BB meeting today, because the school will be having exam for 2 weeks. Therefore there will be 2 weeks break for the boys. However, the drill team members were dedicated enough to come back and practice. Form 4 members were excused from coming today, as they are going to have their first exam paper tomorrow. Today's practice was a very meaningful one. There was a goat-setting session before everything started, and a "review" session after it ended. They were taught how to straighten their arms during quick march (that's the aim of the day, to make sure everybody has "STRAIGHT ARMS") In overall, the boys did not really do well today, but we can see that they've been trying their hardest. I believe we can see significant improvements shown by the boys in no time. That's all for today~ :D

Parade Meeting - 27th April 2008

Today, the boys started the meeting with the band practice. Our band major Sergeant Kevin did not turn up today. Mr Leong was quite satisfied with our performance, at least we've tried our best to improve ourselves~! Again, we were taught a new song "Navy March", and practised the band formation.

Then, we went up to the hall for the praise and worship session. Chaplain's message was really meaningful. Today's slogan: "FROM FEAR TO FAITH", simple and powerful. He said that once we humans are able to overcome fear with faith, we will be successful. He shared a video with us. It went like this:

5 year old Korean named Ye Eun appeared in a tv show, Star King Record. She was born blind, yet she can play the tune of after listening to a song, without referring to the music sheet. To know the story further you can watch the video below. It's worth-watching!

After that, we went back home.

20th April 2008 - Parade Meeting

Today the boys falled in, and had their devotion sessions. After that, they went into the classroom for their band practice. Mr Leong, the band instructor lectured us for almost 30 minutes.

"You're the worst batch of band members that i've ever taught for over 30 years of teaching brass band!!"
"You're not being dedicated! You want to make performance but you are not willing to come back for practice? What joke is this?"

Then, Mr Leong started in teaching the band formations. We had shapes like arrow, square, heart, music note and so on. They are all nice and simple. That was the first time all the boys are being so cooperative and obedient. All of them worked hard to ensure there will be no mistakes during the performance in PESTA.

Today is also our Awards' Day. Captain gave out the service, scholastic and skill-learning awards to the Boys. However, those who did not pass up the fortnight card will have their badges held, until they hand the card in.

That's all for today. The boys were asked to come back again next week for further practice.

13rd April 2008 - Enrolment Sunday

Today, the prefect camp was still going on. The same number of boys came out of camp, to join the enrolment service. Sergeant Kevin was the parade commander. The ceremony started with the Boys and Girls falling in and form the guard of honors' Line. They waited for the Guest of Honor's arrival. After that, uniform inspection took place. Then, they marched into the churched and joined the Sunday Church Service, together with the church members.

Sergeant Willie and Sergeant Yap Fook Lim were promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. We will be seeing them in blue sashes next week~! The promotion was held inside the church. Then, there was an NCOs' and Young Leaders' Vow session. That was when the Boys and Girls make their own promises saying that they will do a good job as a leader.

Finally, We had a photo-taking session and everybody went back home after that.

In the afternoon, the boys were asked to turn up for parade meeting, because there will be band practice by then. However, not many of them came, and the practice had to be postponed to next week.

Special Olympics Band Service

On the 12nd April 2008, which is a Saturday, the 2nd Sandakan Boys' Brigade Company was invited to a band service in a Special Olympics event held in Sibuga Sports Complex, Sandakan.

Unfortunately, at the same time, the Prefects' Camp was held at the same time and therefore, 7 band members weren't able to come out of the camp to attend the band service. However, a letter was written to the senior assistant of students' affair and the boys are allowed to go out of camp.They are: Pte Seck Min Guang, Pte Jedd Chung, L/Cpl Sebastien Chen, Cpl Chung Vui Lam,
Cpl Sweeney Ku, Cpl Daniel Fan and Cpl Siah Boon Kiat. Some of them did not have enough sleep the previous night. They had to take a short nap in the church van. Thanks for your commitment!

At 6.30am, every band members reached Wisma Basel and got ready with their respective band instruments. We reached Sports Complex at 7.00am. Sergeant Kevin gave us a short briefing, and told us the plannings for the band later on. The whole officiation ceremony started at 8.30, by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Sabah.

However, Sergeant Kevin was careless enough not to start the band as the march-past event started. He thought that it was a rehearsal. It was such a disgrace for the company, and for the Boys who stood there. Let's just hope that he will go reflect himself on the mirror and realise how stupid he was!

After that, the ceremony ended at 9.00 am. The boys went back home by then.

Parade Meeting - 6th April 2008

Today every boys came in sportswear. We were expected to go for their our sports, basketball and football before the guard of honor practice. Besides, the junior section members were allowed to stay back and have games. They first took out their pokemon cards, and start "killing" each other!

After that, they went out to the carpark. One of the boys spotted a centipede there~ It wasn't dead when Augustine took out "shieldtox" and spray it to dizziness. Bravo Sir Alex came out and STEP~! There goes the centipede....

Enrolment Sunday will be held on this coming Sunday and we really have to practice hard for that because the church members will be watching us on that special event. However, the basketball is not in the bandroom. Therefore, all the boys have to go for football at SK Sung Siew. This is the first time that all of us get to play football together.

First 2 teams were formed, one with Sir Andrew as the leader, the latter with L/Cpl Nicholas as the leader. The game was indeed very exciting. The boys managed to dribble well, and shoot perfectly! Finally, Sir Andrew's team won the game!

At 3.30pm, all of us came back to Wisma Basel and started our guard of honor practice. The color party members had been decided. Sergeant Willie will holding the color, Sergeant Yap will be the flanking Sergeant and Sergeant Khim Khim will be the color Sergeant.Everything went smoothly until Sergeant Kevin mixed up some of the commands. However, Captain was able to explain the sequence, and everything went successful.

Finally, we falled out. Sir Raymond ended the meeting with 2 announcements:

1)There will be a community service on 12nd April. Members are required to be present in Wisma Basel at 6.30. The band is going over to the Special Olympics.
2)13rd April will be the Enrolment Sunday. Boys are asked to come by 7.45 in their ceremonial uniforms. Remember your navy blue ties.

Then, we sang the BB Vesper and went home~

School Cocurriculum - 3 April 2008

Today, as planned, the boys and girls went to the Basel church for the extra curricular activities. After the bell rang, the NCO's and Young Leaders went into their respective classes and took attendance of the members who were present. Then, they walked in lines, all the way to Basel church.

As the members reach the church, Mr David Lai, who is one of the church members was there to welcome to boys with the song "More". The members went singing "more, more, more, i wan more, more, more." The atmosphere was very nice indeed! Then, it's time for some slower songs. Chaplain took over the devotion. They sang "Call Upon" and "I Give You My Heart". This excites the members more when all the songs were played with live band!

Next, Rev James continued with a brief message from himself. The message today was all about "confidence". He displayed pictures in which a cat walking pass 6 fierce dogs and a SPM student who has a large tumor on her face scoring A in her maths. This showed that we need to have confident in order to succeed in everything we do.

Then, we had a session with Sir Alex. He helped in promoting the BB and GB. This is the climax of the meeting as the main objective of having this session in the church is to attract the new members to join Sunday meetings. All the members were given forms to fill in so that the NCO's and Young Leaders can follow up the recruitment job. A slide show was also projected in the church. There were pictures and videos taken 2 years ago in the PESTA. The members cheered a lot when they see the boys taking part in the drill and band competition.

Finally, the session was ended with light refreshments. Then, we started to pick up the rubbish in the church, and helped to pack the instruments up and went back home.

Parade Meeting - 30th March 2008

Today the boys had a simple fall in. After that, we went into the classroom and had devotion. Next, we were told to carry our instruments into the activity room and have our band practice.
Mr Leong, our band instructor didn't come today. So, the practice was conducted by our band major. In overall, the band is not ready for the PESTA yet. They boys have to try their best in order to make the whole thing a success.

After that, we had our award classes. The awards are Campers Basic for year 1 and 2, Campers Advance for years 3 and 4 and citizenship for year 5. Campers basic was conducted by Captain Raymond, Campers Advance was taught by Sir Andrew and Citizenship was lead by Chaplain. The boys all had a very fun time learning the skills, especially those who took citizenship.

Then, the senior NCO's of BB and GB had a briefing session with our chaplain. Chaplain told us that the school had approved the chuch council's suggestion to bring the BB and GB members over to the church for their cocurricular activities on the coming Thursday. He was shocked when we told him that approximately 397 members are going over. After that, we made arrangements and distributed our jobs. The briefing was then ended.

After the briefing, Corporal Siah then moved out to the parking ground to see the boys drilling. Captain Raymond was the commander when he was being briefed. He was amazed when he saw the boys having improved tremendously. He wasn't able to call the commands accurately as he wasn't exposed to those beforehand. The members no longer have problems with tukar haluan and jadikan squad. If consistent practice is carried out and all the members have the spirit to drill well, i believe they can perform their best in the competition.

Next, we had a short guard of honor practice. The company will be having Enrolment Sunday in a fortnight's time. Captain taught the GB and BB the required movements during the ceremony. The parade commander and color party weren't decided as yet. We'll have to wait for the sergeants to decide.

After that, the boys falled out. Captain announced L/Cpl Augustine as the quartermaster of the company. He'll be in charge of the band room and the sale of accessories. He said that whoever wants to buy any equipments or badges can go to him and get the purchase form. Then, the boys went back home.

Parade Meeting - 23rd March 2008

Today, most of the form 3 members were absent as they are having an Excel test on the incoming week. They were excused from turning up. L/Cpl Augustine was the parade commander today. He wasn't able to call out the command properly and everybody went fooling around. However, our captain had a uniform check with us. He checked for the boys who didn't wear proper mufti, he checked the belts, shoes and socks. NCO's were punished in a heavier way compared to non-NCO's. It was a long time since we last had such uniform check and most of the boys were not too concerned about this matter. If the uniform inspection is conducted regularly, the company's discipline will improve in no time.

After that, Captain Raymond had a briefing with the boys who are going to KK for PESTA 2008. He told us the do's and don'ts which we have to pay attention to. He also reminded us the things needed to be brought over to KK during the camp. Furthermore, he stated that he was worried of the band as the current condition isn't too encouraging. The drill wasn't too good neither. Well, let's wish all of us good luck so that we can present our best in the PESTA.

We had our drill practice after the briefing. The boys didn't know commands like "hormat ke kanan", "pandang kanan", "jadikan skuad" and "tukar haluan". It was a good opportunity to teach them those.

After that, we had our praise and worship session. Today is Easter Sunday and a very special programme was planned. Rev. James showed us the preview of "The Passion of Christ" through the LCD projector. The scene in which the prisoner was crucified was very scary. He told us that Jesus had undergone the same process. This showed that how much Jesus had sacrificed for us.

He added that Jesus passed away on Good Friday, and was resurrected after 3 days. This is why the following Sunday is called the Easter Sunday. He asked whether the members believe in the resurrection of Jesus. He showed us examples such as the invention of telephone by Alexander Graham Bell, which was initially considered impossible. He said: "If you can believe in such technologies, why not believe in the resurrection of Jesus?". We had a really great time with Rev. James during the praise and worship session. After that, we had some refreshments and another drill practice session.

This time the boys drilled slightly better. Corporal Siah tried the whole set command out and most of them were well done. However, there were some minor confusion in the command and Captain was there to help and solved his problems. After that, we falled out and went back home.

I hereby wish the PMR and SPM students who are going to sit for the Excel test which starts tomorrow good luck. Hope that all of you can pass with flying colours.

Parade Meeting - 16th March 2008

As usual, today the Boys falled in at 1.30pm, and went into the classrooms. The Basel church members came to have a discussion with the BB and GB regarding the recruitment issue. It seems that the new students are not willing to attend the Sunday parade meetings and our Captain had issued this problem. Finally, the meeting was held. The BB and GB captains and senior NCO's with Young Leaders were told to attend the meeting.

Ms Yap Pak Shun, and Mr Moo Fah Lin, who are ex-principals of SM Sung Siew also attended the meeting. Both of them are awesome leaders. They managed to tell us the actual school policy, especially the co-curricular marking scheme which we were not clear with. We were able to sort things out properly.

They found that the students are often told the wrong information. Take for example, Sergeant Kevin Wong kept giving informations and was not able the tell the information source. This makes the matter even confusing. Sergeant Kevin made another mistake by mentioning the word "gangster". He actually meant "naughty boys" in the BB meetings at school, and used the wrong word.

Mr Moo reminded him to be careful when it comes to the usage of terms as the wrongful usage may eventually hurt other people's feeling. In the whole meeting, Mr Moo said that the BB and GB Body lack communication with the school's teacher advisers and therefore miscommunication often occur. He encouraged the members to show a good example to the new students so that they will be more interested to join the meeting on Sunday. Sir Alex was efficient enough to plan the recruitment programmes on the spot~!

Next, the boys were asked to practice their drills. Corporal Siah Boon Kiat was the commander. He is going to lead a number of 12 boys in the PESTA Drill Competition. We didn't really do well in our practice, and Sir Andrew asked us to do push-ups. He introduced a new system in which whenever a commander punishes the members, he himself has to be punished too. Therefore, he did push-ups with the boys. I believe this is a very good method to train the boys to be have the spirit to drill well as the commander himself is showing a good example.

After that, the Boys and Girls gathered in the badminton court in Wisma Basel. We had our very first praise and worship session of the year, and this is also the first time we are having it using live band. Our new chaplain, Rev James Wong who had just been transferred from Tawau gave the members an exciting talk on faith. He mentioned that faith is required in each and every one of us in order to succeed in whatever we do. God will only love and care for those who are faithful, and that's why we should to have faith in everything we do!

Talking about chaplain reminds us of Pastor Ngui, who has been transferred to Tawau. We miss her very much and hope that we can see her again. We wish her all the best~~

After the session, the BB captain made an announcement saying that the due date for those who still wants to join the PESTA is next week. Entries after next week are not going to be accepted. For the GB, the captain announced that next week is Easter Sunday and the girls do not need to come for meeting in their uniforms, they come in their GB T-shirts.

Awards & Band Course

On the 10th, 11th and 12th March, 2008, a course has been held for our boys. The main aim for this course is to provide chance for the boys to achieve either the First Aid or Nature Awareness award. Our band instructor, Mr Leong turned up for both 11th and 12th for the band course.

First Day-10th March 2008

The boys reached Wisma Basel at 9.00am sharp. Our captain, Sir Raymond Wong gave us a talk on this activity. We were then separated into two groups- the first aid group and nature awareness group. Sir Raymond added that Mr Leong will be there for the band practice in the afternoon.Sir Raymond first walked into the first aiders' classroom and explained the requirements to get the award, that is to pass a paper test, a practical, to attend a course in the Red Cresent Centre, and to be present on all the three events. He

then introduced us our instructor, Preacher Lo who was an Ex-Staff Sergeant. He then passed the class to Preacher Lo.

Then, Sir Raymond went to his own class, that is the Nature Awareness class. The requirements to pass the award are abo ut the same, that is to pass the paper test, hand in assignments and not to be absent on all the events. He then drove the boys to the jogging park in Taman Tshun Ngen, to collect leaf species in groups. It was a great chance for them to explore the park's widths and lengths. The boys were asked to jot down all the characteristics and the uses of the plants. They actually had fun besides learning about nature =)

At the same time, the first aiders were taught the basic principles of first aid, the simple sicknesses, their signs and symptoms together with the ways to treat them. We were taught the common sicknesses such as shock, internal bleeding, external bleeding, burns and scalps.

A case demonstration was held too. Preacher Lo asked for a few volunteers to demonstrate the case. 5 boys volunteered! *claps* The case was like, a boy acts as casualty, and another one acting as a reckless driver while the other three will be acting as the first aiders. So, it went like this..

It wasn't too successful as the boys involved panicked but at least they've tried. Preacher Lo pointed out the mistakes made by the boys and called it a day.

In the afternoon, Sir Alexander, who is our full-time officer, bought us chicken rice as lunch and expected us to get ready for the band practice. It was really great for him to drive all the way down to Mile 1/2 and to get us our lunch *Thanks a lot, Sir Alex! You're the best!*
However, our Sergeant Kevin Wong had cancelled the practice because he thought that the senior trumpeters weren't around and the boys couldn't do without the absentees *that's too bad , huh?* This is a very wrong concept and i believe all of the members wished that he can continue the practice. Sir Alex wanted them to proceed with the practice, however he was too late as the boys had contacted their parents and were ready to go back. Sir Alex then asked the boys to call all of the band members to attend practice the next day. He even drove som e of the boys home by using the church van! *Once again, THANKS!! =)*

Second Day-11th March 2008

Once again, the boys were in the Wisma Basel at 9.00am sharp. Sir Andrew came into the class. He taught the boys how to identify human bones and uses of different types of bandages. He found out that most of the boys do not know how to tie a reef knot, therefore he taught us. He added that in order to become a first aider, one has to know how to tie a reef knot. The boys tried and tried but at last, all of them knew how to do it. *That's our boys!* The lesson today was more to external injuries in which a casualty was hurt and h ow a first aider is able to treat him.

For the nature awareness award, Sir Raymond drove the boys to where they went the previous day. This time they w ere told to observe the pitcher plants and jot down their characteristics. Pitcher plants were one of the categories that boys had to put into their scrapbooks, which is one of the group works assigned by Sir Raymond. It was, again, another great chance for them to have a look at those rare plants. The boys wer e really excited and they had a lot of fun learning about the nature!

Both the classes were ended at 11.00 am and Sir Andrew bought us lunch today. It was "mixed rice". Everyone was hungry so they ate everything and were given a short break until 12.00 noon. They moved their band instruments to the school for the practice, as the Girls' Brigade were having their Young Leader Training Camp and the band will cause disturbance if they have their practice there. The boys were supposed to have their practice at the grandstand, however the school drama team occupied the stage and they had to move over to the junior block and practise there. Mr Leong came at 1.00 pm. We were given the opportunity to play the songs that we are not familiar with before we were taught the new ones.

Mr Leong left at 3.00pm. Although the practice was supposed to end at 4.00pm, we were dismissed earlier on by Sergeant Kevin.

3rd day-12th March 2008

Today is the last day of all the courses. The nature awareness group went to the library to do some research on the data's collected du ring the last two days while the first aiders were taught by Sir Alexander on bandages. They were asked to read a text. The first aiders had a very brief lesson and revised what they have learnt on the past two days. A Q & A session was held.

In the afternoon, the boys were allowed to go downtown for their lunch. They boys walked all the way from Basel Church to downtown! *claps* They were told to come back by 1.00 pm and all of them did. However, the band course was postponed for about half an hour as the band storage room had its key stucked inside the lock. Luckily, brilliant Corporal Kwan Lik Jing had the crazy idea to climb inside the room from the "balcony" to open the door from inside and the door was unlocked. Thanks to the bravo's (Kwan Lik Jing, Nicholas Syn and Chung Vui Lam), they risked their lives!! And, we managed to open the door.

Practice went normal today. As the drama team wasn't there, we had the chance to use the grandstand. We played the songs which we are going to play in the PESTA repeatedly, and were not too satisfied with our standard.

As a conclusion, we wish that the old boys who left BB can come back and support the company. I believe everybody can do well no matter who the band major is. After all, if everybody does his own part, the band will surely be able to play well in the competition. However, the current condition doesn't seem too encouraging, so i hereby announce that we are in urgent need of experienced members for the PESTA, and for our further company activities, so, to the ex-BB boys, you are most welcomed to come back and help out. It'll be much appreciated.

SM Sung Siew Sports Band

On the 28th and 29th of February 2008, our school, SM Sung Siew had held its 48th Sports Day at Sports Complex, Sibuga, Sandakan. It started at seven o’clock in the morning to 5 o’clock in the evening. The Boys' Brigade members were involved in the march past ceremony, which was held at the 29th of February.

We had our rehearsal in the morning, at 9.00 am before we were allowed to go for the noon-break. After that, everybody came back at 1.30, getting ready for the ceremony. The sports day was officiated by the guest of honor, Datuk Chu Vui Fai.

This is a very good experience for all the Boys, especially the private boys, which joined the 2nd Sandakan for no longer than 2 years. The whole band will be going to the PESTA this year which is going to be held in KK and we believe that this is indeed a very good start for us!
